Metal zippers are made of copper or aluminum. Compared with nylon zippers and resin zippers, it is more robust. And it is often used in jeans, coats and backpacks.

 

We use metal zippers a lot in our lives, whether it's for clothes or bags. However, many people overlook zipper maintenance when it comes to maintaining their clothes or bags. In the long-term cleaning process, if the metal zipper is not maintained, there will occur discoloration, staining and other phenomena. So, how to prevent discoloration of metal zippers?

 

In general, copper alloys react with acids, alkalis, oxides, reducing agents, and sulfides to form colored salts. When the surrounding fabric is full of such chemical elements, the metal parts of the zipper, such as teeth, zipper slider and gold fittings, will change color. And this kind of chemical reaction is easy to take place in hot and humid conditions. Such reactions can occur, for example, if a product is pressed during sewing and then packaged directly or it is kept in a plastic bag for a long time.

The reactive colored cloth will change color. In addition, soft colored fabrics containing sulfur can discolor copper alloys and produce stains.

Wool

In general, clothes made of wool do not use plastic zippers. Color change occurs when metal zippers are bleached with wool. How to prevent metal zippers from discoloration in this case? In general, wool can be bleached in the following ways. 1) Use oxidant to bleach (hydrogen peroxide, etc.) 2) Use reducing agent to bleach (hydrogen sulfide, etc.) In addition, some wool is bleached with chlorine oxide for wear resistance. Gases (chlorine, sulfur dioxide, etc.) will be produced if clothing is not properly washed or neutralized. Under wet conditions, these sulfites and chlorine oxides react directly on the metal surface. In this case, we should use wool fabric that is thoroughly washed and dried. Besides, we should allow plenty of time before packing the ironed clothes.



Leather

The color change of leather products is due to the tannins and acids used in leather making. This tannin is formed from sulfuric acid and other inorganic acids, chromium compounds, tannic acids, and acetaldehyde compounds. Because leather itself does not remove such tannin compounds easily, large quantities of chemicals are usually stored in leather. To prevent discoloration of the closed end metal zipper, we should use leather that has been thoroughly washed and tanned.

 

 

Paraffin

Paraffin wax is the material that coats the metal zipper teeth so that it can slide smoothly. When metal zippers are sewn onto fabric that has been waterproofed, paraffin wax melts during ironing and contaminates the fabric. In this case, we should put some paper or cloth between the fabric and the rose gold metal zipper for ironing.
