Pockets
You can reduce the weight by reducing the padding inside the parts. You can design a casting with strategic cavitation (what we call a "metal protector") to reduce your casting weight without sacrificing structural integrity. You can also use ribs to strengthen the assembly after reducing padding.
Draft
If you do not take craft into account during casting design, your casting will not be removed from the mold. You need to make sure that your die castings have a greater taper than the outer wall so that when the alloy solidifies and shrinks and fits more tightly to the inner wall. Proper drafting will make it easier to produce castings.
Same Side Die Dimensions
Another very important technique is to make sure that your critical dimensions are on the same side of the mold. This will lower your die casting price.
No Undercuts
If you have a undercuts in the part design, your regular die casting mold will not work. You will need to add a slider (which is the moving part perpendicular to the drawing direction of the mold), but this will increase the time and cost of casting.
